Dave Winer succumbs and gets a new Mac; new Apple laptop updates imminent

March 4, 2007 · 6 Comments

After a certain amount of vacillation about whether or not Apple is about to release a new line of portable computers, Dave Winer finally broke down and got himself a brand-new 17″ flagship MacBook Pro, deciding that a Mac in hand is worth two in the rumor mill.

I was so on the fence about this, it was totally not an impulse decision, I almost turned around a few times on the ten-minute drive to the store. But I didn’t, and now I have the computer, and I couldn’t be more pleased.

Good call, and this corroborates two related thoughts:

  1. It never fails to amaze me how many tech luminaries and alpha-geeks are Mac users, and
  2. Now that Winer has moved off the fence, we can expect incredible new portable Apple gear any day now. The time is upon us. We should all thank Dave for being the reluctant catalyst by helping him decide which EVDO provider to use.

I bought my Powerbook in December of 2005. The next month, the Macbooks were released. So, I just got my first Macbook last month. Your theory is in line with my purchasing decisions as well.

I bought my 12″ PB G4 in February 2006, just before the Intel PBs were released. I was expecting their release and am still happy with my decision.

Can you really say that with a straight face? I’m not trolling here, but the MacBooks are just so much faster than the G4 books that they replaced, that I can’t understand how anyone could be happy with buying a PBG4 when the MacBook, which shipped 4 months after you purchased, is a faster and better designed machine. To top it off, it’s even cheaper in cost than the 12″ PBG4 was.

Was I originally happy when I heard about the Intel transition? Not really. But, after I got my hands on one, I realized that the days of the PPC mac were numbered.

It’s easy to be happy when there’s such a margin of time before Apple’s new hardware is actually a) available at your favourite retailer with a better return policy so you won’t have to fight with Applecare, and b) debugged of major bugs (excessive heat, in this case).

dmunsie: I totally agree. One Intel Macs were announced, PPC became less a technology problem for Apple more one of marketing and spin.

    PPC is dead. Sorry.
