GracefulFlavor

FAQ

The following are imaginary questions I’ve answered from imaginary people.

So what’s with the name Graceful Flavor?
Not much. I was in Madrid one day this past spring, walking through Retiro park, when a guy walked by me with his girlfriend. He was wearing a green t-shirt with “Graceful Flavor” emblazoned across the front in a cool typeface, and it dawned on me that it would make a good, estoteric, somewhat funky blog name.

What happened to your old header graphic?
A GF reader kindly pointed me to the author of the artwork — whom I did not remember and could not find despite fairly strong Google-fu — and I contacted him asking for permission to use it. He wasn’t interested, so I removed it. If you recall, this section of my FAQ used to ask readers where I could contact the artist, because I loved the image and had questions about how it could be used.

If you are a graphic designer and are interested in talking to me about designing a custom header for Graceful Flavor, please get in touch.

Do you hate Microsoft? Are you an Apple slappy?
Not one bit. I love technology as a whole, and I’m drawn towards technology that lets people solve problems and express themselves in simple, intelligent ways. I appreciate design and elegance, because what isn’t in a product or a design is becoming as important as what is. Right now, Apple’s technology sits in this confluence most neatly, but I am excited for Vista and have no doubt it will be successful.

What’s Apple’s biggest weakness right now if someone were looking at switching?
The lack of a real, native office suite for Intel Macs. The Windows world is currently way, way ahead with Office 2007, and it’d even be ahead with only Office 2003. Office 2004 for Mac is great, but it’s not Universal yet, so it’s not a go-forward application. It’s legacy and aging fast. And no, OpenOffice or NeoOffice don’t count, sorry.

So does that mean you think PowerPC is totally dead and no longer has any value?
PowerPC is, for all intents and purposes, dead and it’s value is falling every day. It was good while it lasted, but when Jobs announced Apple’s x86 direction, PowerPC became more a messaging and postioning problem than one of technology.

What software do you use to maintain Graceful Flavor?
Graceful Flavor is hosted, for the time being, on WordPress.com. It will eventually be moved to its own domain, on which I will run a custom install of WordPress.org’s software. For now, I compose in WordPress.com’s web control panel via Firefox 2, or I use ecto, a desktop blog editing client. I manipulate images in Image Shackle, a Dashboard widget, or Image Tricks, a small, lean application. I ping Technorati and other blog tracking sites via WordPress.com’s own services, and I also use Pingoat.

Wow. That’s a lot of links.
Yeah, it is. There’s lots of stuff on the Internet.

If I send you something newsworthy, will you blog about it? Can I be, like, a tipster?
You certainly can. I can’t guarantee I’ll write about what you send me, but I’ll do my best. You can get in touch with me via email, or you can track me down via chat. I’m Cerberus9 on AOL IM and jsventura(AT)gmail(DOT)com on Google Talk. Do the necessary symbol substitutions to make the Google Chat address valid.

Are you available for panel discussions/conferences/lavish boondoggles? And would you entertain offers to write for other sites/publications?
Yes and yes. As I mention above, get in touch with me and we’ll discuss whatever it is you have in mind.

What other sites/authors inspired you to make Graceful Flavor?
I’m a big fan of John Gruber’s Daring Fireball, Jason Kottke’s kottke.org, Robert Scoble’s Scobleizer, Cory Doctorow’s Boing Boing, and Gina Trapani’s Lifehacker. They’re all A-listers and at the top of the game.

What is the average airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
What do you mean? African or European?

AIIEEEEEEEE!
